Sea-Tac international arrivals: customs, timing and meeting your chauffeur

Landing at Sea-Tac from overseas? How customs works in the International Arrivals Facility, how long it can take, and where to meet your private chauffeur.
After an international flight lands at Sea-Tac, you clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the International Arrivals Facility, collect your bags, and exit toward the main baggage claim. The Port of Seattle suggests allowing roughly an hour or more for the process, longer at peak times. Your chauffeur tracks the flight and plans the meeting around that window.
International arrivals are the one airport pickup where the landing time tells you very little about when you will actually reach the car. Passport control, the baggage belt and the walk to the meeting point all add time that varies from flight to flight. This guide explains the sequence so the wait feels predictable.

What happens between the gate and the curb
International flights at Sea-Tac are processed through the International Arrivals Facility, the dedicated customs building connected to the main terminal. In broad strokes, the sequence looks like this:
1. Deplane and walk to passport control.
2. Complete your CBP inspection at a kiosk, an officer's booth or, if eligible, through Mobile Passport Control.
3. Collect checked bags from the international baggage belts.
4. Pass the final CBP exit point.
5. If Seattle is your final stop, follow the signs for passengers exiting the airport. Connecting passengers recheck their bags and take a separate path.
The Port of Seattle's international arrivals page describes the current layout and wayfinding, which is worth a look before you fly.
How long customs usually takes at SEA
There is no fixed figure. The Port of Seattle suggests allowing about an hour or more for customs processing and notes that late morning through mid-afternoon tends to be busier. Several wide-body arrivals landing close together can stretch the lines; a single late-evening flight may move quickly.
Other variables include how fast your bags come off the aircraft, whether you are traveling with children or elderly relatives, and whether anyone in your party needs secondary inspection. We plan an international pickup with that range in mind rather than counting on the best case.
Mobile Passport Control and Global Entry
Two programs can shorten the passport stage.
- **Mobile Passport Control** is a free CBP app. According to CBP's Mobile Passport Control page, it is available to U.S. citizens and Canadian citizen visitors. You submit your information after landing and present the app at the inspection point.
- **Global Entry** members use dedicated kiosks and have their own exit line at Sea-Tac.
Neither program speeds up the baggage belt, so if you checked luggage, the time saved at passport control may simply move to the carousel. Still, both can make a noticeable difference on busy afternoons.
Where your chauffeur meets you after customs
For a meet-and-greet, your chauffeur waits inside the terminal at a meeting point confirmed with your reservation and then walks with you to the vehicle. The Port of Seattle identifies the main baggage claim area as the usual place for greeters to meet international passengers once they exit.
If you prefer curbside pickup, message your chauffeur when you have your bags and are walking out; the car comes to the arrivals level. For a first visit to Seattle, after a long-haul flight or with a lot of luggage, most travelers find the meet-and-greet less stressful. Our guide to how a Sea-Tac arrival pickup works covers both options in more detail.
Phones, SIM cards and staying in touch after landing
Plenty of international travelers land with a phone that is roaming, switched to airplane mode or waiting for a local SIM. Before you fly, a few small steps help:
- Save the reservation confirmation and the dispatch number offline.
- Note whether Sea-Tac Wi-Fi will be enough for messaging, or whether you will turn on roaming.
- Tell us the best way to reach you: a messaging app, SMS or email.
- If a family member is booking for you, give them your flight number so they can follow the arrival too.
If you cannot connect at all, head to the meeting point confirmed with your reservation and wait there; your chauffeur will be watching for your flight's passengers.
Luggage after a long trip abroad
Travelers coming home from a month overseas, or visitors arriving for an extended stay, usually carry more than they would on a domestic hop. Tell us the number and size of the bags when you request a quote. A sedan works well for one or two travelers with a couple of suitcases; the Luxury SUV handles a family with large bags; the Executive Sprinter suits a group or a tour party. The fleet page lists luggage capacity for each vehicle.
Arriving for a cruise or a connecting stay
Many international arrivals at Sea-Tac are headed somewhere else next: a downtown hotel before an Alaska sailing, a home on the Eastside or a business meeting the same afternoon. If you are landing on the morning of a cruise, give yourself a margin; the gap between landing and boarding cutoff can disappear in a slow customs line. See our Seattle airport car service for transfers to hotels, homes and both cruise piers.

FAQ
How do you know when I have cleared customs?
Your chauffeur tracks the flight's landing time and plans around the usual processing window. A quick message once you have your bags is the most reliable signal, and the meet-and-greet point covers you if your phone is offline.
Can visitors who are not U.S. or Canadian citizens use Mobile Passport Control?
According to CBP, Mobile Passport Control is for U.S. citizens and Canadian citizen visitors. Other travelers use the standard kiosks and officer booths, so plan for the full processing time.
Will my chauffeur wait if customs takes much longer than expected?
International pickups are planned with the customs process in mind. Waiting time is reflected in your quote, so ask how extended waits are handled when you book.
Is curbside or meet-and-greet better after an international flight?
Meet-and-greet is usually easier after a long flight, with lots of luggage or on a first visit to Seattle. Curbside suits seasoned travelers with light bags who want to step straight into the car.
Can you take me straight from Sea-Tac to a cruise ship?
Yes, we provide transfers to Pier 66 (Bell Street) and Pier 91 (Smith Cove). Confirm your terminal and boarding window first, and allow a comfortable margin after an international landing.
